Why should employee training reflect current needs and business priorities?
Employee training programmes are powerful tools for retention, upskilling and reskilling.
Employee training programmes are powerful tools for retention, upskilling and reskilling. Taking your company’s specific circumstances and needs into account ensures that training focuses on what employees need to fulfil their responsibilities and develop. At the same time, it aligns with achieving the company’s organisational and business goals.
Targetted employee development culture can also help attract top talent: people want to work for businesses that care about their development. Training as one of the tools for employee development can increase job satisfaction, motivation and productivity, and contributes also to employee wellbeing.
- Industry-specific training helps employees understand better new products, technical processes and equipment;
- Role-specific training helps employees perform their jobs better, such as sales and customer service trainings for call-centre staff;
- People skills training – such as emotional intelligence, mental health and leadership skills training – contribute significantly to self-development, interactions with others at the workplace, and team effectiveness;
- Employee wellness trainings help raise the awareness on topics such as the importance of caring for your mental health, career wellness, physical wellness, managing stress and improving resilience.
How can you determine exactly what your business and employees need?
- Define the company’s goals and business priorities: what are you trying to achieve with employee training.?
- Identify the employee knowledge, skills and competencies needed to achieve those goals and priorities;
- Establish what knowledge, skills and competencies employees already possess and which gaps need to be addressed;
- Talk to employees, managers and supervisors in person and/or analyse the development needs through questionnaires, surveys and other methods;
- Evaluate your current training resources and decide what to review, change, remove or introduce from scratch.
A successful employee training programme must contribute to the achievement of the company’s business goals.
Training for its own sake, without contributing to the bigger picture, does not justify a budget. You need clear, specific short- and long-term company goals to develop a training plan that supports them. Next, create a system for identifying and prioritising the training needs supporting those goals, and use all that information to guide content development.
